High Tea With Mrs Woo: Da Capo Al Fine

Written by enkha on April 7, 2008

High Tea With Mrs Woo comprises of three Chinese-Malaysian born sisters (Rowena, Juliana, and Angela) now based in Newcastle, Australia since 1988. Both Rowena and Juliana have Graphic Arts & Visual Communication backgrounds, while Angela has an equally impressive double degree in Economics and Commerce. The womenswear label HIGH TEA WITH MRS WOO was launched in the summer of 2004 and has had a huge following since winning the 2005 NSW Mercedes Start-Up Awards and have had the honour of exhibiting our designs at the Victoria & Albert Museum (London), Object Gallery (Sydney), Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery (Regional Australia) as well as Shanghai Fashion Week (China) and Australian Fashion Week (Sydney + Melbourne).

HIGH TEA WITH MRS WOO is a style that fuses Western influences with Eastern charm to create an unusual and striking flavour. We love to bake a good story and throw together unexpected ingredients in our designs, combining unusual patterns and textures with a strong, rich colour palette. We are inspired by family, everyday life experiences, cinema and travel. It influences the way we visualise our work - conjuring up scenes, mood, meaning and expression for our designs. The journey continues...

To return to the beginning and continue to the end’ describes the musical term ‘da capo al fine’. Inspired by this simple process of repetition, this work reminisces lost melodies. This finely-tuned composition of trench dresses, wrap tops, detailed skirts and trousers aims to recapture memory, emotion and colour, experienced through a musical score. The ensemble of floral motifs and woollen fan flowers are played in harmony with soft Australian Merino wool, combed cotton and corduroy. Rich crimson and smoky grey melodies strike a fine ivory chord with the melancholy of midnight black.

Oscar Calvo: The OC Man

Written by enkha on April 7, 2008

The OC OSCAR CALVO menswear label is aimed at the sleek and stylish guy not afraid to make a statement. Founded in 2004 by Melbourne designer Oscar Calvo, this is definitely a label to watch. It is fresh and exciting with quirky prints and a modern take on the retro.

Calvo's first collection was launched in March 2005 where the collection featured a high end tailored street look with hoods, and graphic tops made from quality fabrics. He participarted in the first monthly fashion shows at the new Melbourne landmark, Federation Square, in March 2005. He was also a finalist at the Mercedez Benz Start Up Program in 2005, and in November of the same year was one of the ten top finalists to return as a Representative at the End of Year Designer Showcase, where he won the audience poll for Designer of The Year.

In June 2007 in the arts precinct side of Johnston Street, Collingwood, Oscar Calvo opened his flagship boutique. There you'll find his collection of clothing, as well as footwear and accessories.

'The boutique is also a specialist fashion district. A space dedicated to the unique; eye-catching and avant garde of young Australian men's and women's fashion. It will have an eclectic mix of the past, present, and future designers.'

In the words of Oscar Calvo:

'For the OC man it's easy to go from the beach to the dance floor. He indulges himself with a never-ending party wardrobe, wearing multi-functional clothes like cool double-button floral shirts in a mix of melon, grass green and vibrant red, paired with a slim linen blazer and skinny pants. Fine merino wool button-up v-necks matched back with little low rider soft silk shorts that are loud and fastened with thin leather belts or silk ties.'

Louis Vuitton Snags Another Fashion Icon

Written by enkha on March 3, 2008

Keith Richards is the latest celebrity to be featured in Louis Vuitton’s advertising campaign. Photographed by Annie Leibovitz, he’s the latest celebrity to front the Louis Vuitton ad campaign.
This rock legend joins LV’s “Core Values” campaign, which launched last Fall and is designed to pay homage to the fashion house’s “travel heritage and classic monogram leather goods.”

“We thought it was important to continue with someone unexpected,” Antoine Arnault, Louis Vuitton’s Head of Communications says. “I think when people are flipping through a magazine, this will stop them.”

“The good thing about Keith is, he’s big just about everywhere. He speaks to the 20-year-old who’s into rock ‘n’ roll and the 65-year-olds who went to [a Rolling Stones] concert when they were 20,” Antonie concluded.

Keith Richards’ Louis Vuitton ad campaign will debut in a series of general-interest titles in April.

Sister Act

Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman—cast as rivalrous siblings in The Other Boleyn Girl—have seemingly nothing in common. But as it turns out, the utterly uninhibited bombshell and the self-possessed pixie are more like sisters than you'd think.
